History and Legends
Ancient Roots
The tireless passion of winemakers and oenologists continues to uncover new horizons in the world of vines and wine — a millennia-old story whose roots reach back even before the first written texts. Vines and wine, together with olive trees and grain, form the very essence of Mediterranean culture. This sacred triad — celebrated in ancient religions (Dionysus, Ceres, Athena) and later consecrated by Christianity — has endured through criticism and prejudice.
Today, science confirms what tradition has always known: wine, when consumed in moderation, is a natural gift that promotes well-being. Its enduring presence through the millennia is proof of a deep bond between fertile land and human care and wisdom.
Timeless Legends
Already known to the Greeks and Romans, who enjoyed the resin-flavoured Muscatellum at their banquets, Moscato is now believed—according to recent studies—to be the first cultivated grape variety. Today, this white grape has found its ideal terroir in a limited hilly area of southern Piedmont: fifty-two contiguous municipalities across the provinces of Asti, Cuneo, and Alessandria, with Canelli, Santo Stefano Belbo, and Strevi at its heart.
This region, with its strong winemaking vocation and part of a prized European pedoclimatic zone, produces wines with an unmistakably fruity bouquet, great longevity, and remarkable elegance. Here, around mid-September, the golden grapes are gently crushed using rollers, with skins and stems immediately separated by soft air- or water-operated presses that preserve their integrity. The resulting must is then chilled to zero degrees to block fermentation.
